Two extended weekend lane closures are planned on I-55, according to an update from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The closures will start at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 11, and end at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 14, weather permitting. During this period, lanes in both directions of I-55 near the Des Plaines River bridge will be closed, although at least one lane in each direction will remain open.
Motorists should expect significant travel delays and are encouraged to use alternative routes. Digital message boards have been installed ahead of the work zone to provide real-time traffic updates. IDOT recommends using Illinois 47 and Interstate 80 as alternative routes to avoid congestion.
An additional extended weekend lane closure will be required to complete the work. This closure will be announced in advance and is subject to weather conditions.
