On October 31, 2024, the Channahon Police Department, with assistance from the Illinois State Police Tactical Response Team (TRT) SWAT, executed a high-risk search warrant at a residence on Deal Avenue. The operation was part of an ongoing firearms investigation.
Bill Fossett, aged 37, was detained without incident during the raid. Officers discovered what appeared to be an improvised explosive device (IED) in the kitchen area of the home, along with additional bomb-making materials.
In response to this discovery, a secure perimeter was established by Channahon Police and State Police TRT SWAT. Residences adjacent to the location were evacuated, and a "shelter-in-place" order was issued for homes on Deal Avenue between McClintock and Andrew Avenue.
Specialists from the Illinois State Police WMD team, a Will County K9 Unit, and the DuPage County Bomb Squad were called in to assess and address the situation safely. The device was found to be safe in its current state but constructed similarly to a "pipe bomb," featuring a pipe structure with secured endcaps and a wick. After ensuring no immediate danger from the device, authorities lifted the shelter-in-place order.
Following these developments, Channahon Police conducted a comprehensive search of the residence. Fossett has been charged with several offenses: possession of explosives or incendiary devices, possession of firearms/ammunition without FOID (Firearm Owner's Identification), and methamphetamine possession. Additional charges may be pending.
Fossett remains in custody. No injuries were reported among officers, suspects, or civilians during this incident, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety in the area.
